Sunshine Coast Sports’ own board member, Steve Hirst, broke yet another world record catching a football from a record height of 227.4 metres. This occurred in Sunshine Coast stadium, having the ball dropped from a helicopter above the field. This surpassed the last record of 221.89 metres, held by former Carlton footballer, Brendan Fevola.
Steve is no stranger to record breaking feats. In October of 2022, he made headlines and obtained his first Guiness World Record for pushing a lawnmower 107.5km around the stadium over 24-hours, to raise money for Inclusive Kids (IFYS).
"The ball will be travelling up to 200km/h when it reaches me," Hirst explained. "I do feel a little bit bad about trying to take the record from 'Fev' as I am a mad Carlton supporter and really enjoyed watching him play footy, but IFYS is a charity close to my heart. I’m passionate about sport and the power it brings to children, so all the funds raised will be directed towards the Inclusive Kids grassroots sports program."
The community has shown incredible support for his endeavours. From his lawnmowing event he was able to raise $70,000 for IFYS, showing his passion towards the organisation. Steve’s ability to highlight IFYS and the funds he will raise for this catch will be incredible and impact many lives. IFYS marketing manager Paul Morton was elated to see him break another world record.
Hirst has not set a specific fundraising target for this record attempt. "I haven’t set a fundraising total as I don’t want to restrict myself in what can be achieved," he said. "All donations are welcome online or on the day."
The event was a thrilling spectacle of a world record attempt to support a worthy cause, raising $20,000. This donation will help provide food for kids going to school with no breakfast and an empty lunchbox. The Sunshine Coast community is extremely proud of Steve’s effort and his success. We cannot wait to see what his next challenge will be.
