When it comes to resilience and perseverance we should look no further than to para-athlete Alexa Leary. Her journey to the Paralympic swimming trials is a monumental achievement and is a testament to her unwavering determination and passion for the sport.
As a former elite triathlete, her life took a significant turn when she was involved in a cycling accident in 2021. This resulted with six months in hospital undergoing lifesaving surgeries. Despite all odds she walked out of the hospital, beginning on an extensive rehabilitation journey.
Leary’s transition from triathlon to para-sports was a significant milestone in her journey. Embracing the new chapter in her life, her dedication to training and regaining her strength is inspiring. With the accident leaving permanent brain damage and weakness down her right side, she trained to the best of her ability to ensure she would excel in her aspirations.
Qualifying for the Paris 2024 Paralympic games is a remarkable achievement for Leary. Her qualification comes with immense pride from not only her family but people across the Nation.
Leary spoke to Nine’s Giaan Rooney after the race
"I've actually come so far. I'm so impressed I'm even in the water. I'm like, 'Yeah, Lex, you've come so far'."
As her preparation will now continue for the games, her journey will serve as a powerful reminder of the strength of her spirit. Leary’s story will resonate with athletes and non-athletes alike, highlighting the importance of perseverance and the support of a strong community.
