The 41st Lifesaving World Championships were recently conducted on the Gold Coast from August 20 to September 8. Clubs from all over Australia, plus an additional 45 countries, battled it out over 19 days of competition consisting of pool events at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre and Ocean events at Kurrawa Beach.
With the event only being held every second year, Maroochydore had back-to-back wins in 2000 and 2002. In 2018 the club became the first ever team to with both the ocean and pool events, along with the overall world title.
Each team consists of 10 women and 10 men, in both the Open and Youth competitions. With an already incredible track record at these events, this year Maroochy Surf Life Saving Club placed 4th in the Opens and 1st in the Youth division, further substantiating themselves as one of the best clubs in the world.
Maroochy SLSC attributes the Youth World Title to an outstanding overall team performance, with team events constituting 11 of the 15 medals won; 2 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze. Co captains Byron Dieckmann and Sammy McGrath are noted to have achieved some incredible results, leading the charge for the rest of the team.
"This year, in many cases, team members sacrificed their own chances of individual success to the benefit of the team by focussing on our relays both at the pool and at the ocean.” stated, Danny Short, Director of Surf Sports at Maroochy SLSC.
Facing significantly larger clubs from the Gold Coast, the feat is an incredible achievement for Maroochydore, and the victory will be etched into the clubs 108-year history.
The Maroochy SLC Youth and Open teams at Worlds were proudly supported by the Walker Corporation.
Looking to the future, Maroochy Surf Life Saving Club will have many athletes competing over the 2024/25 Summer Season and we cannot wait to cheer them on.
